This project is a personal narrative exploring my familial relationships as we navigate through recent challenges and changes. It explores the emotional ups and downs, the realities and joy of growing up with people with many different needs. This work has underlying themes of health and healing, with visual references to the Victorian notion of ‘Convalescence’. I wanted to explore this ‘lost art’ which was seen as a temporary tranquillity, to reclaim the term, which I believe doesn’t account for long-term adversity, and the tranquil moments sought over a lifetime. The family portraits taken in nature and around the home, primarily in the overgrowth of our garden, is where we feel most connected and comfortable in this healing environment.
