This body of work is the result of the arts and landscape project ‘Droves and Downs’, produced by Dorset Visual Arts, in partnership with Cranborne Chase National Landscape. Myself and three other artists (Siân Cann, Tonia Gunstone and Richard Gregory) have made work exploring our individual perspectives and findings within the Cranborne Chase Landscape. Our creations came together during exhibition where our work consisting of a variety of mediums, (painting, drawing, sculpture, photography) shared similar themes, but took on new layers and meaning when sharing a space together.
While capturing the enchanting beauty and undeniable spirituality of the Cranbourne Chase Landscape, I discovered scenery reminiscent of nostalgic fairytales and folklore, with an underlying liminal atmosphere that exists within the rural British countryside. These threads of hidden stories can be found woven throughout my images. The portraits were made within the community, at local events but primarily with volunteers working on practical conservation. Their knowledge of the area and the stories they’ve shared have helped further my understanding of the relationship between people and nature, which I often explore within my practise.
